2017 Grants

assisting local nonprofits and area students

Founded in 1945, the Foundation awarded its first two grants for $100 each in 1946. We've come a long way since then!

The General Endowment Fund was the first fund created when the Leelanau Township Community Foundation was established in 1945. Grants using the interest from this endowment fund help local nonprofit organizations that sustain youth and elders, assist with education, health care, recreation and the arts.

We make additional grants from the funds we manage. During the first quarter of 2017 we made grants totaling $55,838.00.

Grants from the Foundation and the Youth Advisory Council were awarded to the following recipients:

Arts and Culture

  • Northport Arts Association to fund 4 exhibits through Summer 2017, Leelanau UnCaged 2017, and the installation of a mural on the north wall of the Northport Marina.
  • Northport Community Arts Center to fund auditorium maintenance and programming for the NCAC.

Community Initative

  • Village of Northport to fund the installation of streetlights on Nagonaba Street.
  • Northport Public School to fund new furniture for the school auditorium lobby.
  • Samaritans Closet to fund assistance with Leelanau Township residents living expenses.
  • Leelanau Christian Neighbors to fund "Blessing in a Backpack" program, items for the baby pantry.
  • Northport Public School to provide funding for the 2017 Giving Tree, run by the National Honors Society.

Education

  • Leelanau Children's Center to fund scholarships for Leelanau Township residents.
  • Northport Energy to fund educational materials.
  • Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum to provide funding for the 2017 Northport Shipwreck Expedition. 
  • Northport Public School to fund sewing classes for the After School Program.

Environment

  • Village of Northport to fund the creation of a rain garden in Northport to reduce run-off storm water.
  • Saving Birds Thru Habitat to help improve habitat for migrating birds.

Health & Wellness

  • Leelanau County Cancer Foundation to provide support for non-medical assistance to families affected by cancer.

Recreation

  • Northport Youth Sailing School to fund a U.S. Sailing Counselor Course, equipment, sailing scholarships.
  • Village of Northport to support the annual Cars in the Park event.
  • Northport Creek Golf Course to fund construction of and equipment for a driving range.
  • Northport Public School to provide camperships to Shady Trails Summer Camp.
