NORTHPORT, Michigan - Results from the latest Leelanau Township Community Foundation grant cycle that ended in September have been announced, with approval for grants totaling $17,950.

Grants were awarded from the General Endowment Fund, which comes from the foundation's oldest fund, includes a grant to Leelanau County Cancer Foundation for $7,500 to provide support for non-medical assistant to families affected by cancer. The Leelanau County Cancer Foundation was also granted $2,500 for support from the Leelanau Township Health & Wellness Fund.

"This very generous grant from the Leelanau Township Community Foundation will enable us to assist more Leelanau Township residents who have been diagnosed with cancer when they find themselves struggling with financial matters. Our goal is to help ease their worries. Our mission is to help improve the quality of life for Leelanau County residents and their families who are being impacted by cancer." - Marti Paquette

In addition, twogrants from the Leelanau Children's Center were approved:

  • $4,950 from the Basil Antenucci Leelanau Children's Center Fund for scholarships.
  • $3,000 from the Early Childhood Fund for general support

The Leelanau Township Community Foundation was founded in 1945 by Francis H. Haserot in memory of his friend Gilman M. Dame. Haserot directed that the foundation support vital civic initiatives, which remains the mission today. Since 1945 the foundation has awarded over $3.5 million in grants to address local community needs including education, health and wellness, arts, culture and history, recreation, fire and rescue, township projects, environmental and conservation projects, improvements to parks and beaches and to support the local library. It has also awarded thousands of dollars in scholarship to local students.
